Three Must‑Have Design Elements for a Successful Community Playground

The 3 essentials

Community parks and playgrounds are important focal points for neighbourhoods. According to Play Australia, meeting and connecting socially supports everyone’s wellbeing and reflects a more connected community that values children and their right to play. Local neighbourhoods should therefore have access to well-designed play spaces that bring together people of all ages to have fun, socialise, be active, and connect with others.

When it comes to what residents want in a playground, they consistently highlight three key components. At adventure+, we believe that designing a successful community park should prioritise the following three play elements: swings, slides and climbing equipment.

1. Swings

Loved by children of all ages, swings are an essential element in any successful community play space. They encourage shared experiences between parents and children and, in the case of nest swings, allow several children to play together, build friendships and develop social skills at the same time.

Some popular options for swings include:

Community Swings

There is a wide variety of swing configurations available, from single-bay swings through to multi-bay frames accommodating several users at once. You can also select from different seat types to suit your community – for example, nest swings that support group play, toddler seats for younger children, or a combination of both.

Multidirectional Swings

We call this type of swing a ‘Gyro’ because it moves freely in every direction. Gyro swings can comfortably support several children at once and can be used for sitting or lying down, relaxing between play, and socialising together.

2. Slides

Slides are always a favourite, with the sounds of laughter and excitement showing just how much children enjoy them. Their fast, dynamic motion often makes them the most in-demand item in any play space. With a wide range of slide options available to suit different layouts and budgets, it’s easy to include this highly popular play element while still managing project costs effectively.

Slide on play Unit

Most commonly, slides are integrated into a playground unit, extending from an elevated platform. Many community parks offer both a lower slide for younger children and a higher, more adventurous slide for older users. Available in a range of lengths, profiles and configurations, slides can extend up to 10 metres, allowing you to tailor the experience to your space, budget and age group requirements.

Mound Slide

A slide can also sit against the side of a natural or purpose-built mound. Mound slides can create more interest in a play space and are a great option if you don’t have a combination unit in the playground.

3. Climbing Elements

Including climbing opportunities in your community playground is essential. Children are naturally drawn to climbing because it challenges them physically, builds confidence through a sense of achievement and allows them to safely experience height and risk in a controlled environment.

There are many ways to introduce climbing, from simple ladders on platforms through to rock walls and more complex rope structures. To explore a range of climbing options and view our full selection of play equipment, visit our climbing equipment page.

By incorporating these three fundamental elements, you can create a high‑performing community playground that is fun and challenging for children, encourages active play, and strengthens social connections across your community.
