The Victorian Government's Level Crossing Removal Project is removing 110 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne by 2030. The level crossings at Cramer Street in Preston has been removed and a new open space underneath the rail bridge has been created to feature seating, play areas, BBQ facilities and native planting. adventure+ was engaged by Tract Landscape Architects to design a playground for this new play space under the elevated railroad that the community would love.
Client: Tract Landscape Architects
Multi-tower castle themed playground
The playground is unmistakeably a castle. Clad with timber, small portholes and windows, the design not only looks striking but promotes imaginative play. With one end of the playground suited for older children who love a challenge and another end perfect for juniors, there is something for everyone.
The designers made careful decisions to include a combination of both fixed, structured play as well as natural play elements. The structured play element is a huge play tower, standing at around 5 metres tall and incorporating a slide coming from its highest platform. Linking to the tower is a variety of other play elements that surround the play towers.
This new play space includes a lot that makes it a real attraction to the local community. The space features a spectrum+ hybrid play unit with a rope bridge, two slides, rock wall and other activities. The use of timber guardrail verticals and bright green highlights, combined with warm coloured rubber undersurfacing gives the space an exciting aesthetic.
The play space is designed to be a tranquil, appealing space that invites families to linger and relax as well as providing numerous opportunities for active play.adventure+
