Creating a theme

Armed with a sketch from the landscape architect, Playce, adventure+ designed this playground to have a train theme. It’s often difficult to achieve a theme while not compromising on play value and at Deepdene we believe the perfect balance was stuck. While each platform with curved roofs represent carriages of a train, play items like a tunnel and plastic HDPE panel give the apperance of a train engine.

Thoughtfully designed play experience

The City of Boroondara saw it critical to provide for both senior and junior children in the playground design. To accommodate this request, adventure+ designed the play unit to increase in difficulty as it ascended – the lower platforms for juniors with low and easily accessible play activities and the higher platforms featuring more adventurous elements like larger slides.

Designed for the community by community

Community consultation indicated that residents wanted a number of specific pieces of custom designed playground equipment, as well as a ticket booth, swing sets and track ride. There was also a need to create an attractive environment where families could sit in the shade and enjoy a picnic meal or spend time comfortably while their children played. For this reason, a number of trees and picnic tables were incorporated into the design.

Timber/steel hybrid shines

The equipment by adventure+ is constructed from the spectrum+ hybrid style of equipment that utilises steel uprights with timber platforms and cladding. The timber gives a natural look, and the rustic, irregular cladding adds to this further.

The hybrid style is ideal where the council or developers want a natural feel but want to reduce the amount of timber used in the ground.
